Today, my day started at 4:40 a.m. We had to start early because I would be starting the day with Ronald. He is on the planning of the packing station, which is a separate company, called Scherpenhuizen Packaging. They pack a large amount of Scherpenhuizen's cargo. Ronald started with counting the stock of everything that required packing. He needs this to take in account considering the planning and orders they have. After this, he puts the stock in to the computer system, and the program calculates how much stock he is missing.
When he has done this, he adapts the planning of the people to the orders coming in. He counts the amount needed and the amount of production per line per hour. In this way he can calculate the amount of hours he needs to plan in for one order.
When he was done planning, I joined Maarten. Maarten was doing the administration for the packaging. He got papers with the amount of hours worked by each person per production line. He had to substract the amount of breaks the persons had, and the amount of time used to clean up etc. Then he showed me how he fixes the amount of surplusses or deficits in an order. The orders are calculated by the average weight per package. In this case it were paprikas. He calculates the weight per package, which was 500 kilogrammes. The operators of a line have to write down the average weight of a package each 15 minutes. Using this, Maarten can calculate how much overweight or deficit a package has. When he has a deficit, he simply pulls some paprikas from another order, which had a surplus, and put it at the deficit.
After the explanation, I went into the packing hall and got a tour with explanation by Tarek. He is responsible for the training of new people in the company hall. He explained all of the packing machines to me, and showed examples of all kinds of things. He explained how the sorting of paprikas goes, but also tomatoes and cucumbers. He explained that the machines and the people at the machines are being recognized by a hair net. So this means that white is a new person at that machine, blue is more experienced at that machine and green means it's an operator. The operators pay attention to the working tempo of the workers, while he or she is working alongside with them. He also explained that the people with caps are the teamleaders. Red is the teamleader, and orange is assistant-teamleader. After that he brought me to the warehouse of all the cask (fust). He explained that a lot of the cartboard boxes they use, are brought in as plates, and folded by a machine, so they always have boxes in stock and they save time by not being dependent on a transport company for the cask. He also showed how the sorting of paprikas on weight and size is done, and how they are packed. He showed the same considering cucumbers and tomatoes.
After Tarek's explanation, I got to Huub. Huub is head of the paprika department. Paprikas are the main cargo for Scherpenhuizen Packaging, because they need the most packing. Huub showed me around all things the paprikas come at while they are at Scherpenhuizen. When the paprikas come in, Huub counts them, and writes them down, so he knows exactly what he has in stock. Then he explained that the system the use is FIFO, which stands for First In, First Out. This means that the paprikas that came in the first, will be the first to be packed. When Huub counts the stock, he writes down the size of a paprika, this is done by taking the diameter of a paprika in millimetres. This sizes also have an average weight. Using this weight, he can calculate which boxes he needs for the Paprikamix (a red, yellow and green paprika packed together) which comes in 500 kg packs. All the boxes have barcode. He gives this codes to the drivers of the trucks, who bring the boxes to the corresponding production lines. All the mixes are then packed, put into boxes and sent to the buyers everywhere in Europe.
When Huub was done, I went to Raymond. He is a truckdriver in the hall, and he put me to work in the delivery department. This means putting boxes on pallets, stickering them, bind them and bring them to the transport. I did the first two jobs, which was really exhausting. I stacked boxes of paprika meant for C1000 in The Netherlands and for a super
market in the United Kingdom. The job was like I said exhausting, but worth the effort because I still learn from it.

This was a summary of my second day, putting it roughly.
